To Them, they can contact their ancestors at altars, caves, or places connected to Mayan societies. The association of caves to the underworld is one interwined with the older Mayan civilization and is an aspect continued by the Chuj people.

There are other ethnic groups that believe ritual items are needed in order to make the journey into the afterlife. The Lakandon bury their people facing the sun, and wrapped in a tunic and hammock.

Often a dog was ritually sacrificed, or an effigy buried along with the deceased in order to complete this task.

Other ethnic groups believed that the spirits of the dead still had tasks to complete in the afterlife. The Mam , before fully accepting Christian values thought that the dead lived within volcanoes and other places.

The Tz'utujil in Santiago feared that souls of drowning victims inhabited the bottom of Lake Atitlan.

Those who still had a journey or a task may need more or less items, and it depended on how those of the tribe believed on what occurred after death.

But many ethnic groups also observed a celebration of their deceased ancestors later on. The Poqomam gather after death and hold a feast that may last for nine days.

Then they pray for that deceased person every day of the dead for the next seven years. Their belief is that souls return to visit and partake of food once a year, in a celebration called K'in Santo.

The family members must perform a ritual to the deities to ask release of the souls of their dead relatives and to allow them entrance into the house.

There have been many archaeological discoveries of lavish tombs within ceremonial complexes from the Classic period. These aristocrats were placed in tombs at the bottoms of funerary pyramids that sometimes consisted of nine stepped platforms, perhaps symbolizing the nine layers of the underworld.

Other temples were constructed with 13 vaults symbolizing the layers of the heavens in Maya cosmology. These temples reflected the continued worship of these nobles.

In some instances, members of the royal family or young attendants would be sacrificed to accompany the lord in death. The tombs were filled with precious goods including fine polychrome pottery , effigy figurines, jade and marble pieces, masks, mushroom figures.

While these figures were found in Maya tombs, many of these items were also used in the service of food, drink and for additional ritual purposes. In the Tomb of the Red Queen inside Temple XIII in Palenque , the remains of a noble woman and all the objects inside the sarcophagus were completely covered with bright red vermilion dust, made of ground cinnabar , perhaps intended to suggest blood, the symbol of life.

Other elite members of society were buried in vaults. The bodies of higher-ranking members of society were buried inside sarcophagi.

They sometimes were buried in crypts or underneath the family home. These funerary constructions of the royal often destroyed the residence itself.

Commoners were also buried near or under their houses. These graves did not have extensive burial offerings, but often contained objects that identified the individual: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The guru hid his books in stones, lakes, and pillars because the Tibetans of that day and age were somehow unprepared for their teachings.

Now, in the form of the ever-popular Tibetan Book of the Dead, these teachings are constantly being discovered and rediscovered by Western readers of many different backgrounds--a phenomenon which began in with Oxford's first edition of Dr.

While it is traditionally used as a mortuary text, to be read or recited in the presence of a dead or dying person, this book--which relates the whole experience of death and rebirth in three intermediate states of being--was originally understood as a guide not only for the dead but also for the living.

As a contribution to the science of death and dying--not to mention the belief in life after death, or the belief in rebirth--The Tibetan Book of the Dead is unique among the sacred texts of the world, for its socio-cultural influence in this regard is without comparison.

This fourth edition features a new foreword, afterword, and suggested further reading list by Donald S. Lopez, author of Prisoners of Shangri-La: Tibetan Buddhism and the West.

Lopez traces the whole history of the late Evans-Wentz's three earlier editions of this book, fully considering the work of contributors to previous editions C.

Jung among them , the sections that were added by Evans-Wentz along the way, the questions surrounding the book's translation, and finally the volume's profound importance in engendering both popular and academic interest in the religion and culture of Tibet.

Another key theme that Lopez addresses is the changing nature of this book's audience--from the prewar theosophists to the beat poets to the hippies to contemporary exponents of the hospice movement--and what these audiences have found or sought in its very old pages.

University of Arizona Press Format Available: Scholars have recently achieved new insights into the many ways in which the dead and the living interacted from the Late Preclassic to the Conquest in Mesoamerica.

The eight essays in this useful volume were written by well-known scholars who offer cross-disciplinary and synergistic insights into the varied articulations between the dead and those who survived them.

From physically opening the tomb of their ancestors and carrying out ancestral heirlooms to periodic feasts, sacrifices, and other lavish ceremonies, heirs revisited death on a regular basis.

This book results from a symposium organized by the editors for an annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The contributors employ historical sources, comparative art history, anthropology, and sociology, as well as archaeology and anthropology, to uncover surprising commonalities across cultures, including the manner in which the dead were politicized, the perceptions of reciprocity between the dead and the living, and the ways that the dead were used by the living to create, define, and renew social as well as family ties.

Oct 21, Sarah Grace rated it really liked it Recommends it for: I am satisfied with the ending. D view spoiler [Serena and Tanner all the way!

Orchard definitely keeps you on your toes throughout this book, just like the last one. Lots of crazy plot twists and turns. I really l Well then!

I really liked how the Christian themes came through a lot more in this book than the others. I rather missed it in the first two books, as it was very back-burner, but it was really well done in this one.

All in all, though, I greatly enjoyed this book! View all 20 comments. But just how is she About this book: Review of Book 1 Here! Negative Content- Minor cussing including: There were many parts I loved and parts I was so excited about being right on prior guesses.

The action and plot kept me guessing on who did the crime and why. I so enjoyed this novel along with the previous two in the series and plan on reading whatever this talented author puts out next.

It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author. View all 7 comments. Jul 02, Staci rated it really liked it Shelves: What a fun conclusion to the Serena Jones Mystery Series!

Aunt Martha continues to be a riot. She is so eager to be a part of the action and sticks her neck out routinely in search of clues.

The author takes Serena, Nate and Tanner out of St. Louis in Over Maya Dead Body. This forces Serena to see Nate and Tanner at the same time and in a different environment.

I was thrilled with who she ends up with at the end of the novel. Speaking of the ending, the final pages were spectacular.

I was smiling ear to ear as I read the conclusion and epilogue. I look forward to what the author offers next. My gratitude to publish Revell for a complimentary Net Galley copy of the novel.

I was not required to post a review and the opinions expressed are my own. Well, let's start with Aunt Martha. She's as delightful as ever Now on to Tanner and Nate.

Honestly, there were a few times I wanted to bang their heads together as they tried to one-up each other!

Well, only one of them was going to win Serena. I seriously do not like love triangles, espe 3 Serena Jones Mysteries I'm struggling with this review - how do I review it without giving away spoilers?

I seriously do not like love triangles, especially when I happen to like both of them and you know one is going to be disappointed. In both my previous reviews I said I really hoped the author was going to have another girl ready for the one who loses Serena, and was a little apprehensive that it wasn't going to be the case.

Fortunately, there is a girl, and also I liked her, so thank you for that, Sandra Orchard! Then there's the setting. What a great place to set this story, and was definitely the right move so that Serena could see the guys outside of the "normal" day-to-day routine.

While I can't completely say I'm overjoyed with how it ended, it's definitely an ending I can live with and was sweet in it's own way.

He would remind us how it had once been ugly and unwanted—useless—but in being pushed around by the waves and roughed up by the rocks and sand, it was transformed into a beautiful, sought-after treasure.

Not one person in that family ever asked me how God could be so loving and still let them suffer. A big "Thank You" to Staci for recommending this series to me!

I've enjoyed spending time with the intrepid Serena, the delightful Aunt Martha, the intriguing Carmen, the mysterious Nate and the teasing "Which movie star do I remind you of?

Sep 22, Mikayla rated it it was ok Shelves: I would just like to clarify really quick that the two star rating is not from any bad content.

This book is extremely clean. The rating is only based on the ending. Okay, so the first two books were cute.

They were clean mystery's. For the most part, this one was pretty good. I was excited there was a tiny bit more spiritual content in this one.

The problem is that even though Serena struggles with some things, she never resolves them. I really didn't like that. The main thing I hated about this I would just like to clarify really quick that the two star rating is not from any bad content.

The main thing I hated about this book was the ending. I got so mad I nearly didn't read the last few pages. It completely soured the whole series for me.

Overall, I really hated how this series ended. I will most likely not be reading anything else by this author because there really are not strong messages, and apparent her idea of a good ending and mine differ a lot.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a clean mystery series. Sep 03, Jazzy rated it it was amazing.

I literally got hooked the first page. Maybe it was her writing? Or maybe it was dinner Sep 25, Alicia rated it it was amazing Shelves: This series was entertaining, suspenseful and so hard to put down!

I liked pretty much all of the good main characters, and Serena Jones was a fun, regular person with the intense job of an FBI agent. I also really enjoyed the first person point-of-view take on a mystery, and the mysteries had me guessing the whole time.

The one thing I did not like was the love triangle. I get nervous reading books with them, and I was seriously worried in certain parts throughout the third book that she was going to end up with the wrong guy.

That last chapter and the epilogue were so worth it and wonderful!! Bumping up from 4 to 5 stars just for that ending: Jul 03, Caitlyn Santi rated it it was amazing Shelves: I have loved this series since I read book one, needless to say I was super excited for this one!

I had exceedingly high expectations for this book, and it met and surpassed every single one! I loved that so many of the loose ends that have trailed throughout the series were perfectly tied up, I also loved that there were two big developments that I had predicted since book one that I was actually right about!

I enjoyed this book so much, I hated to set it down and even when I had to my mind sti I have loved this series since I read book one, needless to say I was super excited for this one!

I enjoyed this book so much, I hated to set it down and even when I had to my mind still kept spinning trying to figure everything out!

I love Serena as a character so much, she is just so fun and such a great main character! Eep, I just loved this book so much!

Especially that ending, ahh pure bliss! I truly loved everything about this book, it will definitely have a spot on my favorite books of list and I foresee rereading Over Maya Dead Body as well as the first two books many times in the future!

I highly recommend this book, though I would recommend starting with A Fool and His Monet, I think the awesomeness of this series is best read in order!

I can't wait to see what Sandra Orchard writes next! I received an ebook copy of this book from Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.

Jul 06, Amanda Tero rated it it was amazing. If you're wondering if this book can be jumped into without the other two books having been read I'm not going to give anything away, but a lot of things in this book would have a more powerful punch if you've gotten to know some of the characters in previous books.

That being said, yes, I read this book without having read the other two Serena Jones books. I picked up on the threads that I likely missed so it CAN be read as a stand-alone, but references to past books ma If you're wondering if this book can be jumped into without the other two books having been read I picked up on the threads that I likely missed so it CAN be read as a stand-alone, but references to past books make me want to read them and enjoyed the book overall.

My brain was swirling with the "whodunit" and I didn't piece together things as quickly as Serena did which I liked; I like a good mystery that has me puzzling all of the way through.

As a Christian book There were no parts that made me cringe, no unacceptable language. God was mentioned, prayer was said.

But overall as a Christian book, it wasn't a very strong one. What stood out to me far more was the romance.

I don't like love triangles! But, this one ended happily for me, cause she ended up with the guy I shipped.

That being said, there was a kiss, and almost-kiss. There were a LOT of feelings. I mean, Serena has two guys she likes and they both definitely like her, and she's confused as to which to choose.

If you don't like love triangles, you may not want to read this. Overall though, I'd give this book 4.

I enjoyed the style first-person contemporary is something I'm finding I enjoy , the mystery, and the cleanness of this book I've read some more strictly "Christian" books that made me cringe more than this book.

Jul 24, Laura rated it it was amazing. Serena is an FBI agent who seems to about as clueless as they come, especially about the love stuff.

I started to try to figure out who-dun-it, made my initial guesses, and then got caught up in the story and forgot to try and make my final guesses.

I was admittedly more interested in who would win Serena's heart. Nate, the good ole boy who manages her apartment and has oh, so many secrets, or Tanner, her FBI co-worker who trained her for her job.

And while the romance was hot, the mystery was just as intriguing, but not terribly scary. In themes with the other books, this is an art mystery, this time with smuggled artifacts and people are turning up dead.

I am pleased to say my initial guesses as to who-dun-it were spot on despite the numerous red herrings planted in the story. The faith message is rather weak, but slightly present.

There was one untied string which may or may not mean another book in the series--since it was alluded as to who the killer might be.

I enjoyed reading this book. All opinions are my own. Jul 09, Maureen Timerman rated it it was amazing Shelves: You will be changing your mind as to who is involved from page to page, and just when you think you know for sure, guess what!

There is a lot of action too, firebombs, break line cuts, gunshots, etc. Our girl ends up with both of the guys who have their eye on her, they come to be of help, but will she ever choose just one?

They actually both sound perfect! Of course, darling Aunt Martha is here, and who does she not know?

She is one amazing woman, and we are about to learn more about her, and she seems to have access to all kinds of help. I adored the epilogue at the end of the book, and maybe there will be another novel in the offing, we can hope!

I received this book through Revell Publishing Book Bloggers Program, and was not required to give a positive review.

Jul 11, Kav rated it it was amazing. Campy and quirky and sooooooo much fun. The author's devious plotting leads Serena and company on a merry chase around Martha's Vineyard as they work on solving a very personal murder mystery.
